In the wake of the controversies surrounding the 2021 general provincial election the New Democrats opted out of an all party committee on electoral reform – something which leader Jim Dinn still stands by.
The committee was formed to “modernize” the elections act, but the NDP had trouble with its composition, asking that it feature representation of all parties and include two members of the public.
When that didn’t happen they decided not to participate.
According to Dinn, the committee should reflect the best interests of the people, and when what he calls their “non partisan” asks were rejected, he says he knew the direction the committee was going in.
He says it became clear that Minister John Hogan was more interested in exercising his power, and government was more interested in exercising its power as a majority.
