Tributes for one of the province’s biggest political personalities are pouring in.
Former Port de Grave MHA and Bonavista-Trinity-Conception and Avalon MP John Efford passed away just days shy of his 78th birthday which falls on January 6.
Past and present government officials from all levels are remembering Efford for his dedication to the fisheries, his constituents, and the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Former Premier Roger Grimes, who defeated Efford in the 2001 party leadership race, remembers the side of Efford many didn’t get to see.
He calls Efford one of the nicest men he’s ever met, who loved to have fun and was an incredible politician.
Danny Dumaresque, former MHA for Eagle River and friend of Efford’s, calls him one of the most passionate and energetic politicians of our time.
He says Efford gave all of his energy to the province and gave NL a great example of public service.

In a statement issued yesterday, former Premier Danny Williams says Efford was a “force of nature on the political landscape his entire career.”
Former Bay Roberts Mayor Philip Wood says he’d meet with Efford weekly to share breakfast and will remember him for his friendship.
Premier Andrew Furey expressed his condolences, applauding Efford’s strength of character and personality.
Former Premier Brian Tobin calls Efford the most authentic politician in the province, saying you never had to guess his thoughts on any matter.
Former Prime Minister, Paul Martin, says he was saddened to hear of Efford’s passing. Efford served in Martin’s cabinet as Minister of Natural Resources.
Martin, in a written statement, says that Efford had a “remarkable political career” and was a passionate advocate for his constituents and his home province.
Martin says Efford never shied away from a challenge, facing them with resolve and kindness.

John Efford poured his heart and soul into his Province. He was passionate about his work, and quick with his humour. He was kind and thoughtful to a young fellow like myself working in Confederation Building, and you never forget that.
Rest In Peace, John.
