The Better Business Bureau is warning of a new scam targeting Instagram users.
They say the scam starts with a message from an account the victim is already following. However, that account has been hacked.
The message asks the person to click a link that, once accessed, will compromise the account. Then, the hijacker will say that in order to regain control of the account, the victim must take a video saying that they have invested in a type of cryptocurrency and encourage others to do the same.
The scammer then uses that video and account to trick others.
To avoid such scams, the BBB says to ask questions of the messenger to prove that that it is a legitimate link, contact the friend outside of Instagram first to verify the message, and to check the BBB’s scam tracker to see if such scams have already been reported.
