The Newfoundland and Labrador Brain Injury Association is stressing the importance of understanding the warning signs of head trauma.
It was recently revealed that revered actor and comedian Bob Saget died following a blow to the head that he may have thought wasn’t very serious.
Cassandra Stockley, coordinator of programs and services with the association, says there’s a general lack of awareness around the significance of a brain injury and the signs and symptoms associated with it.
She says brain injuries can manifest in many different ways such as a headache, nausea, and loss of consciousness. She says those signs are something to pay attention to and get checked out.
Stockley says undiagnosed brain injuries are fairly common, which she attributes to the lack of awareness around the issue.
She says that a lot of people think they’ll be fine tomorrow, but she argues that a lot of signs and symptoms might not appear until days later, and thus many people might not associate them with the hit to the head.
