An update now on an alleged plot to kidnap a St. John’s man for ransom.
Four people, including Philip Pynn, are accused of kidnapping and extortion in the case.
The charges stem from a traffic stop back in early December on Oliver’s Pond Road in Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s. Acting on a tip, police pulled over a car with five people inside, including a 27-year-old man who had allegedly been abducted an hour earlier.
Pynn, along with 40-year-old Jeff Aylward, 38-year-old Joe Aylward and 33-year-old Theresa Lynn O’Grady were subsequently arrested and charged.
O’Grady faces additional, unrelated charges and remains in custody in Clarenville.
The other three accused remain free on conditions, although a lawyer for Pynn has applied to have his rules for release amended. As well, both Joe and Jeff Aylward are awaiting word on their application for Legal Aid.
The Crown also noted there is a significant amount of evidence and disclosure still to be reviewed in the case.
Provincial Court Judge Mike Madden agreed to postpone the matter until March 3.
