St. John’s city council has approved just over $1.6 million in community and capital grants for this year.
Permit fees have also been waived for the successful applicants, which include 107 community groups and 67 individual artists.
Capital grants are for projects such as building repairs and other construction, while community grants include cash and other resources.
Applications were received in five categories, including Community Groups and Organizations, Special Events and Festivals, Sport Groups and Organizations, Artist and Arts Organizations, and Youth Travel Sport and Non-Sport.
Councillor Jamie Korab said he just happened to have an inquiry earlier in the day from a team preparing for national championships.
He says while some of the air travel is covered, they have to fundraise for other essentials, adding community and capital grants are some of the best money the city spends to support such efforts.
A full listing of all those approved for grants, as well as individual amounts, is available on the city’s website.
