Legendary Irish singer-songwriter Pete St John has died at the age of 90.
He passed away earlier today at Dublin’s Beaumont Hospital, according to his family.
St John is best known for composing The Fields of Athenry and The Rare Ould Times, with his songs recorded by many artists including The Dubliners, Paddy Reilly and Daniel O’Donnell to name just a few.
His songs have also been covered and heard countless times on stages and in pubs throughout this province.
St John was born Peter Mooney in Dublin in 1932, and first tried his hand as an electrician while working in Canada and the U.S.
He is survived by his sons Kieron and Brian Mooney and was predeceased by his wife Susan.
Tributes have already started pouring, including from friends and fans in this province.
