A fuel price watcher expects we’ll again be flirting with $2-per-litre gas prices down the road as the market goes through one of its most volatile periods in history.
There was no change in the price of gas this morning but diesel and the fuels we heat our homes with went up by about six cents a litre. Dan McTeague, President of Canadians for Affordable Energy, does not expect to see any decreases tonight in the regular weekly price setting but foresees some slight movement upward—perhaps about two cents.
The Public Utilities Board has been stepping infrequently outside that weekly setting day to change prices. They have used the interrupter clause four times in the past five or six days, leaving McTeague to wonder why they don’t just let the market forces set the price as it ends up in the same place anyhow.
Newfoundland and Labrador has regulated fuel prices for about the past 20 years.
