The preliminary inquiry has been set for a suspended figure skating coach facing sexual assault charges.
28-year-old Matt Power was charged last summer with sexual interference, sexual assault, making sexually explicit material available to a child, and luring a child. He has remained free on court conditions since then.
Police began investigating a year ago after receiving complaints about Power.
Skate Canada told VOCM News that they suspended him as of January 3, 2021, after the organization was made aware of the allegations.
Power had been a figure skating coach with clubs in Mount Pearl/Paradise and CBS. He’s originally from Marystown but had been working in the metro area as a car salesman.
He’s prohibited from taking part in any skating events pending the outcome of the case, with the preliminary inquiry now set for early September.
Skate Canada says it’s “committed to providing an environment where all Canadians can embrace the joy of skating in a safe and healthy manner,” adding they take harassment, bullying, and abuse issues very seriously.
