The FFAW is raising questions about the lack of data and inadequate science in DFO’s latest capelin update.
The Fisheries Union says the update released this week may have serious implications on upcoming fisheries.
DFO yesterday suggested a cautious approach to the management of the capelin fishery without a full stock assessment.
The union says the latest stock update was provided without any industry participation this year.
President Keith Sullivan says the knowledge collected by fish harvesters, who have spent their lives on the water and have an intimate knowledge of fish patterns, is not reflected in the latest update.
The northern cod stock assessment was cancelled for this year, and the capelin stock assessment shifted to an update due to interruptions in science survey activity last year caused by mechanical issues and the availability of research vessels.
