In-migration of families from other provinces has contributed to an increase in enrollment in the K-12 system for the first time in 50 years.
Education Minister Tom Osborne says there were 1000 more students enrolled in the K-12 school system over projections.
That’s the first increase seen since 1972.
He says with more people able to work remotely, the province saw more people returning to the province or moving here from other parts of the country.
Other contributing factors included immigration and the Afghan refugees welcomed by the province back in October.
Osborne says in 1972 there were more students enrolled in K-4 than are enrolled in the entire K-12 system today.
There are close to 65,000 students in the school system today, compared to 162,000 in 1972.
