Fish and chips shops and restaurants across the province are preparing for one of the busiest days of the season.
Fish has been the Good Friday go-to for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians for generations, but COVID and access to codfish has been challenging for many business owners hoping to fill the demand for a feed of fee ‘n chee.
Rod Forward of the Big R Restaurant on Blackmarsh Road in St. John’s says it’s been a busy time leading up to Good Friday, with some of the toughest work securing fish.
In past years, he would buy the fish as he needed it, but more recently he has had to think ahead and start stocking his freezers months in advance.
Forward says COVID has also made things a bit harder with some staff unable to work due to the virus, but since the pandemic began they’ve had options in place to fill orders with curbside pickup and other measures.
