Artificial Intelligence is being used in a variety of ways and now it’s being applied to help estimate northern shrimp stocks.
The Canadian Centre for Fisheries Innovation has approved a project partnership with three fishing industry associations—The Canadian Association of Prawn Producers, the Northern Coalition, and the Nunavut Fisheries Association—to explore the use of AI in developing a population assessment model for northern shrimp off the east coast.
Managing Director of CCFI, Keith Hutchings, says they’re working collaboratively with DFO to explore technologies to get a better assessment of the abundance of northern shrimp stocks.
“Is there the ability to build a model through things like Artificial Intelligence that can allow greater input into… a population assessment model,” asks Hutchings.
They will use existing scientific survey data and bring that data and knowledge together for a better population assessment from Greenland to the Grand Banks.
