Health Minister John Haggie is hinting that more rapid tests could be made available once schools close for the summer. But until then it remains status quo, with free testing available on the recommendation of Public Health through its online flow chart.
Haggie couldn’t say exactly how many rapid tests the province currently has stockpiled. But says those are there to ensure there’s essential supply should COVID numbers begin to climb again.
Haggie also says comparisons to other jurisdictions prove that this province is doing it right. He says other provinces “have flung the doors open” with rapid tests, adding there’s never been enough, there’s no public health benefit, and now they’re trying to restrict distribution which has become even harder.
This province has distributed about five million rapid tests since receiving its first shipments. Most have been given to schools, first responders, corrections staff and personal care homes. More tests were sent home with school children this week.
