PerSIStence Theatre has launched a project to raise a statue to suffrage leader Armine Nutting Gosling.
The first statue built to a named woman in the capital city will be erected in Bannerman Park next year.
Local artist Sheila Coultas will cast the life-sized statue in bronze.
Project Committee Chair Dr. Margot Duley says the project is long overdue.
“This is a significant moment in the rebalancing of the history of St. John’s and of the province as a whole,” says Duley, “a statue honours Gosling’s neglected role, it’s a step towards a more inclusive presentation of our past.”
