The federal government has announced a national day of mourning on Monday, September 19th to mark the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has declared September 19th a federal holiday to mourn Queen Elizabeth on the day of her state funeral in London.
All federal government employees will have the day off, but the same does not automatically apply to workers in federally regulated industries such as banks and airlines.
The federal government is leaving the decision to follow suit to individual provinces and territories. NL is following the lead of their federal counterparts by declaring a day to honour the late queen. The day will be observed one time only on this coming Monday. As such, all provincial government offices, schools, and other entities will be closed. This will allow public service employees time to pay respects to Queen Elizabeth II and commemorate her reign.
Businesses and other entities are encouraged to commemorate the Queen “in a manner that works best for them.”
Flags at provincial government buildings across the province are being flown at half mast, and a book of condolences is available to sign at Confederation Building.
