Propane furnace users in the province are questioning why they are not included in the Home Heating Rebate program.
The provincial government launched the program to combat high fuel prices, which will see those using furnace and stove oil have some of the cost of heating their home supplemented.
However, one petroleum product is not being supplemented—propane.
Keith Piercey of Corner Brook made the switch to propane once his old furnace gave out.
He reached out to government which told him that propane was not included in the program as it is “not typically used as a primary source of home heating in Newfoundland and Labrador.”
Piercey says he’s reached out to propane suppliers who say that many are making the switch.
He doesn’t think government is aware of the number of people that have made or are planning to make the switch. He says that because it’s listed as a petroleum product, it should get the same benefit.
