Hurricane Fiona will be one of the most expensive natural disasters in Canadian history.
Close to a hundred homes on the southwest coast, mostly in Port aux Basques, have been either obliterated or damaged beyond repair. Others have been severely damaged and in need of major repairs.
Marcos Alvarez, global head of insurance with DBRS Morningstar, says it will take a couple of months to nail down the full extent of the damage, but early estimates put the tally at $300-$700 million dollars. Alvarez says insurance coverage for flooding is difficult to get in Canada.
He encourages people who have insurance on house and car to check with their provider or broker to see if they are covered for a flood. Wind damage is usually covered, but not so with surface water.
Meanwhile, the provincial government is opening up more license to allow the industry to hire more adjusters to speed up the insurance process.
