The provincial government provided an update today on Hurricane Fiona recovery efforts on the province’s southwest coast.
To-date, 805 households have registered with the Canadian Red Cross, representing some 1,000 people.
There are 48 displaced residents now being housed in a total of 22 hotel rooms in the area.
A total of 260 dwellings have been affected. The structural assessments have been completed on 254 of those homes, while assessments on the last six homes in Burgeo are expected to be completed today.
Premier Andrew Furey says as of Monday, the $30 million in relief funding announced last week was already starting to be distributed.
The package allows for $1,000 per household for those who were able to return to their homes by September 30, and $10,000 per household for those who were unable to return.
Another $500,000 is available to municipalities.
Support Sent to Nova Scotia
In the meantime, NL Hydro has sent eight crews to Nova Scotia to help with efforts to restore power supply in areas hard hit by Hurricane Fiona.
NL Hydro CEO Jennifer Williams says the bulk of the damage caused in this province stemmed from storm surge and power outages here were isolated and largely caused by wind.
She says Hydro is pleased to be able to help teams on the ground in Nova Scotia with about 20 Hydro employees in the Maritimes to help restoration efforts.
As cities and towns throughout Atlantic Canada face the aftermath of Hurricane Fiona, several Hydro crews have travelled to Nova Scotia to assist. When disaster strikes we pull together to get the job done. #NeighboursHelpingNeighbours #Fiona @nspowerinc pic.twitter.com/dMFOorGd5a
