Kurt Churchill has been granted more latitude while out on bail and awaiting trial for second-degree murder.
And that is not sitting well with relatives of the victim.
Churchill is accused of gunning down Jamie Coady outside Churchill’s house on Craigmillar Avenue in July 2020. One year later, he was arrested in Toronto, charged with murder, and returned to the province.
A judge found there is enough evidence for trial, but that’s not scheduled until October of next year.
In the meantime, Churchill applied for, and was granted bail, with orders to stay in the province and away from Craigmillar Avenue.
But changes this morning allow him to visit that street, albeit on a very limited basis. Churchill can only go there for one hour a week, between 9 a.m. and 12 noon, and must be accompanied by a surety, or person who put up money and vouched for his bail.
He must also give the RNC 24 hours’ notice before going to his property on Craigmillar Avenue.
Churchill can also now leave the province, and will be monitored to ensure that’s the case. His curfew, which had been 9 p.m. to 7 a.m., has also been relaxed, and is now from 12 a.m. to 6 a.m.
But none of that extra freedom is going over well with Jamie Coady’s sister, who stormed out of the courtroom in disgust.
Churchill’s trial is set for next October.
