The mayor of Port aux Basques says residents are dealing with a lot of anxiety as winter approaches.
Mayor Brian Button says after the devastation caused by Hurricane Fiona, people are on edge when they hear the possibility of an approaching weather system.
He says residents are not only worried about possible damages, but are also concerned as the majority of town infrastructure was damaged during the storm and they haven’t yet had time to rebuild.
Areas of Port aux Basques experienced additional flooding over the weekend after receiving 84 mm of rain.
He says they’re well aware that time isn’t on their side as the town is still working to complete basic repairs. They’re working as quickly as they can but say the rebuild is a long process.
“Fiona left us quite a mess,” he says. “It’s left us a lot of stress and anxiety for everyone involved… but we are trying to make some headway and trying to get things done.”
