Food continues to go up in price and don’t expect relief anytime soon.
A new report says food prices will continue to rise in the new year.
The 13th edition of Canada’s Food Price Report released today predicts grocery costs could increase as much as seven per cent in 2023.
For the average family of four, that means groceries will cost more than 16 thousand dollars for the year, a thousand dollars more than this year. That family consists of a man and a woman each between the ages of 31 and 50, a boy 15 to18 and a girl 9 to 13.
The report predicted a 7 per cent increase this year but that actually ended up being over 10 per cent with the biggest jump in the cost of baker products mainly because of the war in the Ukraine and its impact on the grain supply.
Samantha Taylor, one of the authors of the report and an associate professor at Dalhousie University, does not see the price of anything going down—virtually everything goes up.
Vegetables will be hardest hit with an increase of between 6 and 8 per cent. Meat and dairy will also cost more.
