The Nunatsiavut Government is mourning the loss of a Makkovik elder and musician.
Gerald Mitchell passed away in Happy Valley-Goose Bay on Thursday.
Mitchell is known for his accomplishments as a musician after gaining popularity in Happy Valley-Goose Bay during the 1960s.
He went on to study the arts and had artwork featured in a number of calendars and magazines.
Considered one of Labrador’s most influential artists, Mitchell was honoured with the Stompin’ Tom Conners Award and Unsung Hero Award in 2010.
Nunatsiavut President Johannes Lampe says Mitchell’s legacy will continue to live through his artwork and music.
Elder Gerald Mitchell was 86 years old.
