A report conducted through corrections officers reveals a number of health and safety concerns at the current facility.
Dr. Rosemary Ricciardelli was the lead on the report that interviewed prisoners and 28 correctional officers in late 2022.
The report found that many staff feel unsafe at the current penitentiary and are feeling the burnout from staff shortages.
Staff say they’re being forced to work 24-hour shifts and feel they lacking training when it comes to dealing with mental health, emergency situations and the use of force.
Ricciardelli, who has visited a number of prison’s across Canada, calls HMP “remarkable.”
“It’s kinda gross,” says Ricciardelli. “I wish I had a more professional way to say it.” She says it’s astonishing to see a facility that does not have safety measures in place for prisoners who should not cross paths, and shocking to see units that still have bar doors.
