People watching the ice situation off the east coast are hoping for a shift in winds to help some creatures trapped in ice.
Residents of communities like Bristol’s Hope and Bishop’s Cove in Conception Bay North have been looking on helplessly after a number of white-beaked dolphins became trapped in heavy pack ice pushing tightly along the coast.
Everette Sacrey of the Whale Strandings and Rescue Group says there is little anyone can do except hope for changes in wind direction to help push the ice off shore.
David Neil of the Environment Canada Weather Office in Gander says those longed-for southerlies or southwesterlies are not in the offing in the next couple of days.
He says while winds will become lighter through the weekend, the flow will remain in a northwesterly direction until they come around from the south or southwest by Sunday.
