A 38-year-old Corner Brook woman is dead, and a 39-year-old man has been charged with dangerous operation causing death following a single vehicle crash in Halfway Point early this morning.
According to police, at 12:45 a.m. an officer saw a vehicle approaching head-on in the opposite lane. The officer swerved to avoid being hit, and then tried to pull the vehicle over. The vehicle took flight and the officer did not pursue due to public safety concerns.
Five minutes later, they say a 911 call was received of a single vehicle crash on the main road, with the vehicle in question matching the description of the one from earlier. The woman, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Now, they say James Boone of Halfway Point has been charged for his alleged role in the incident. Police say Boone was on probation at the time, had multiple court restrictions and charges for breeching those restrictions.
He appeared in court today on a list of charges including dangerous operation causing death, flight from police, prohibited driving, breach of probation, and two counts of failure to comply with a release order.
He will appear in court again next Thursday.
Meanwhile, Boone is already before the courts on several other firearms and assault charges.
Due to the RCMP’s interaction with the vehicle before the crash, SIRT-NL will be reviewing the incident.
