A staple of the province’s arts, media and cultural landscape has died.
Chris Brookes, also a longtime resident and advocate for the Battery area of St. John’s, was well known as a playwright, author, storyteller and radio producer for the CBC and independently through Battery Radio.
He passed away on Monday at the age of 79.
His work gained international acclaim, including the Peabody Award and the Prix Italia for his documentaries that have been broadcast around the world.
Brookes’ accomplishments on the local front are numerous, but he’s likely best known as the former artistic director of the Mummers Troupe Theatre of Newfoundland.
He also holds an honorary doctorate from Memorial University and is a recipient of the Order of Canada.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date
