After an initial surge, the flu season in Newfoundland and Labrador has settled down considerably.
Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Janice Fitzgerald says while unusual, the early surge in cases was not unexpected, since similar trends were seen elsewhere this flu season.
Cases of seasonal influenza and other respiratory illnesses peaked in late November and early December and dropped off steadily after that.
Fitzgerald says oftentimes they’ll see a small bump in flu cases in the spring. Other illnesses are circulating on a fairly steady level, but they’re not seeing an overabundance of illness in the community at this time.
