A popular Gros Morne campsite will not be opening its doors to school-aged children from the northern peninsula to the south coast this summer.
Killdevil Camp, located in a wooded area roughly 25 kilometres from Woody Point, will not be open to campers for the first time in decades.
The campsite has served as one of the only summer camp options for children in the region and was a popular destination for school field trips.
Due to a decade worth of financial struggles that has put the camp in nearly $500,000 in debt, the camp announced it would not be opening this summer.
In a post to Facebook, John Organ, the bishop for the area, says the diocese would have to provide nearly $100,000 to cover expenses over income.
While he is saddened to hear the news, he assures that the camp is not closed permanently and is hopeful Killdevil will return to regular operations in the future.
In the meantime, a Facebook group has been created for people to share their memories and rally together to keep the camp open.
