A controversial housing development is one step closer.
St. John’s City Council yesterday voted unanimously to approve an amendment related to the development of four 2-storey apartment complexes at 20 Janeway Place.
Council received multiple letters from area residents opposing the project due to concerns regarding reduced property value, removal of green space and possible exposure to asbestos following the demolition of the old Janeway Hospital years ago.

However, the development was passed last month. Now, council has approved an amendment allowing them to take the next steps.

She says the benefits of the project outweigh the concerns, as affordable housing is badly needed in the city, especially one and two bedroom spaces.
A public hearing is tentatively set for May 16, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall.
