Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador is disappointed that government has abandoned the the proposed regionalization model.
Minister Krista Lynn Howell Declared that the large geography and lack of population density are the main reasons for not pursuing a different form of municipal government which could have involved another level of government such as a county system.
Amy Coady, President of MNL, thought they were getting somewhere this time but they’re not surprised with the turn of events.
She says every region would have been treated differently under regionalization.
Coady points to the recent vote by residents of Gaultois to remain on the island instead of resettling.
She says people don’t want to leave their communities but if a municipal government folds, it then becomes the responsibility of the provincial government—and that costs money.
