The province’s Education Minister believes amendments to the Memorial University Act will help rebuild the public confidence in the institution.
The minister introduced the proposed amendments for a second reading in the House of Assembly on Wednesday.
They include changes to the governance structure of the Board of Regents to allow for teaching staff on the board, incorporating gender-neutral language into the Act and bringing administrative changes to update the names of some Acts and government departments.
John Haggie believes the changes are a step in addressing the public concerns about the university, but they are not the first step.
Haggie says he has met with MUN leadership, including interim President Dr. Neil Bose, and asserts that they have already taken some significant steps.
Haggie says everyone is working to see MUN succeed, and in this sense its success is restoring its reputation.
