A new documentary detailing personal experiences with ovarian cancer has been released.
Yesterday was World Ovarian Cancer Day, and to mark the day of awareness, Belles with Balls NL and Up Sky Down Films premiered their new documentary “Sounding the Belles”.
The film, directed by Roger Maunder, follows the stories of five local women who have personally had or had a loved one diagnosed with ovarian cancer.
Approximately one woman a week in this province will be diagnosed with the form of cancer, which has a survival rate of only around 25 percent as it is often detected at a late stage. There are currently no ovarian cancer specific screening tests.
Alana Walsh-Giovannini and Bonnie Morgan with Belles with Balls say the organization was formed specifically for Newfoundland and Labrador
The organization raises funds for medical research grants and gives money to Masters and Ph.D students who are focussing on ovarian cancer.
