Spring’s lackluster start in eastern Newfoundland is causing some problems for honeybee populations, according to one horticulturist.
It has been a grey and cold spring for metro area, however conditions are starting to rebound.
Todd Boland of the MUN Botanical Garden says most gardens are between two and three weeks behind where they should be for this time of the year.

Luckily, he says, May is the critical month for growing and as the weather improves they should begin to see a “dramatic difference.”
Boland says the slow start shouldn’t hamper most insects, however it has proven to be “very hard” on bees, noting that they’ve had to go a full extra month using their reserves from last year.
He says beekeepers have been supplementing food for the bees, and will likely have to continue doing so until later this month.
