The interim Dean of the School of Nursing at Memorial University says nursing not only consists of bedside practice, but many other opportunities abound.
The province is experiencing a real crunch in the profession with a shortage of about 750 nurses according to the union which represents them. But Dr. April Pike, who has been a nurse for over 30 years, says they are making progress.
In collaboration with the provincial government, the School of Nursing has launched satellite locations in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Grand Falls-Windsor and Gander. That initiative alone, with the help of $2.2-million from government, will result in 72 nurses graduating from those locations.
She says they are probably one of the strongest programs in Canada. MacLeans, in its cross-Canada rankings, pegged MUN School of Nursing at 13th overall.
