The process continues on the southwest coast sorting out property claims related to Hurricane Fiona. The first stage—dealing with homes which were washed away or deemed to be uninhabitable—has, for the most part, been completed. Some cases have been delayed for various reasons but most of the cases have been settled according to area MHA Andrew Parsons.
This second phase involves consideration for homes in the “vulnerable” zone. The structures are still standing and may be habitable but they’re in areas which may be compromised because of things such as land erosion or infrastructure damage.
Fiona struck several communities last September with Port aux Basques being the hardest hit. Most payouts right now are being handled by the provincial government.
Parsons doesn’t know where the process will take them at the end of the day as the federal government and Red Cross are also involved but because of the time involved, the provincial government is handling the claims for now.
