The search and rescue effort behind the loss of the Titan submersible has a former search and rescue coordinator with the Canadian Coast Guard asking questions about protocol for the situation put in place by the companies involved.
Merv Wiseman calls the search effort for the Titan “unprecedented,” noting that it has “set the bar” for all types of future searches.
What was lacking, he explains, was a coherent search and rescue plan by the companies involved—meaning Oceangate and Miawpukek Horizon Maritime.
For example, Wiseman says the incident occurred Sunday morning, but the Coast Guard in Boston didn’t receive notification until 5:30 in the afternoon.
He was surprised to learn that the platform on site didn’t have decompression capacity, and questions safety redundancies that should have been in place—such as having an ROV on site.
Wiseman says there is a list of issues that he could see. He says that plan will likely be a big focus of the Transportation Safety Board’s investigation into the incident.
