The Public Utilities Board is breaking down the changes in fuel taxes with the federal government’s new tax coming down this weekend.
Due to the new federal tax, the provincial government is dropping their current carbon tax, leading to a hike in the tax rate before HST is applied.
Gasoline motor fuel tax will see an increase of 3.26 cents per litre, while diesel tax will increase to 3.97 cents.
As the province does not charge a carbon tax on home heating fuels, those rates are increasing exponentially. Furnace and stove oil will see an increase of 17.38 cents per litre. Propane is increasing by 10.06 cents.
The PUB says they are reviewing the current impact on the cost of supply for motor fuels in the province associated with the Clean Fuel Regulations. Recent changes to provincial regulations require that the PUB establish a carbon price adjustment to mitigate the costs faced by gas retailers. As a result, they expect there may be changes to gas prices, with the next scheduled adjustment set for Thursday morning.
