Talks continue on rectifying the flawed Upper Churchill contract, but Premier Andrew Furey is not tipping his hand as to whether or not the lopsided contract might finally be righted.
Furey has held what he calls “high level” talks with Quebec Premier Francois Legault, but is leaving the details to the negotiation teams.
Legault approached the province earlier this year indicating that he was ready to make “adjustments” to the Churchill Falls energy agreement.
The contract expires in 2041, but it’s possible a new deal could come much sooner than that.
Premier Andrew Furey says while he’s optimistic, any new agreement would have to benefit NL first.
He says if the parameters for a good deal, with the best returns for Newfoundland and Labrador is not present, then there will be no deal.
