RCMP have released more information about a situation in Carbonear this morning that resulted in an emergency alert being sent out.

Around 8:15 a.m. police were notified of a man exiting a car with a rifle case in hand.

The man was seen running in the area of Valley Road, possibly with a gun.

Numerous officers rushed to the scene and established a safety perimeter.

A search of the area between the Green Depot and College of the North Atlantic resulted in police locating an empty rifle case, but no firearm.

Around 9:30 the emergency alert was sent out, and after numerous tips from the public the suspect was located at a home on O’Driscoll’s Lane at about 10 a.m. The man was taken into custody, however no gun was found.

An investigation is ongoing to determine if a criminal offence has occurred.
