The NDP is calling for improved access to health care for transgender people.
Party leader Jim Dinn says that many aspects of gender-affirming care are not covered by MCP, meaning many transgender people have to pay out of pocket for post-op medications and the chest contouring and liposuction that goes along with top surgery.
Dinn says a recent study by Harvard University found that gender-affirming surgery was directly associated with improved mental health, with those who have received the procedures reporting a 44 per cent reduction in the odds of suicidal ideation.
He says transgender people deserve the health care they require free of stigma. He’s calling on the province to take action.
