The overall crime rate in the province is up.
Statistics Canada says the Crime Severity Index rose nationally by four per cent, but in Newfoundland and Labrador it went up by six per cent in 2022 from 2021. However, the current rate is 21 per cent higher than it was ten years ago, 2012.
The total crime rate in Newfoundland and Labrador rose by four per cent last year, but by 13 per cent from ten years ago.
The Crime Severity Index in the province last year was 82.2—higher than the national average of 78.1— and higher than Nova Scotia and PEI, but lower than New Brunswick.
As for metro regions, the Crime Severity Index in the St. John’s area jumped by 19 per cent last year from 2021 and the overall crime rate also went up by 19 per cent with 6,061 incidents per 100,000 people.
The Crime Severity Index is based on Criminal Code incidents including traffic offences, as well as other federal statutes.
