Memorial University says its Student Wellness and Counselling Centre is not at risk of closing or has any plans to decrease services.
MUN was responding to concerns raised by the Students Union, who say the centre is at risk of losing its accreditation with the Canadian Psychological Association due to what they call years of cuts.
The university calls the centre a “critically important resource” and assures that it is not at risk of closing. Memorial says the centre does not need accreditation to operate, however their Doctoral Residency in Professional Psychology program does. The program is undergoing the standard re-accreditation process and MUN is hopeful that its longstanding record of accreditation will be maintained.
On staffing, Memorial says the centre has maintained six full-time positions over the last decade, and while some are currently unfilled none have been eliminated.
They say there are two new residents starting at the centre in September.
