Memorial University has responded to the students union over accusations that it is withholding money from an international student.
According to MUNSU, recent graduate Jada Jones received a grant from the government of Belize, where she is from, to cover educational and living expenses.
All of Jones’ fees are paid, and the union says she is owed a $5,500 reimbursement for the money not used from the grant -which the university is not releasing to her.
Director of Advocacy McKenzie Broders is alleging that the Cashier’s Office is ignoring and dismissing their concerns, and wants MUN to investigate what she sees as systemic and personal racism within the office.
In response, MUN says they cannot discuss individual student files for privacy reasons. But, a refund can only be issued if the funder or sponsoring agency has expressly indicated that the balance of monies beyond tuition can be directly released to the student.
They say in all cases refunds are issued to the original method of payment, or to the sponsor/agency.
They encourage any student with concerns about an employee or situation to contact the Office of Student Life.
