Equinor says it is going to drill a deep-water well in the Flemish Pass Basin about 500 km off St. John’s.
The Bay du Nord project itself is on hold for up to three years until the companies can find a way to reduce the costs associated with development.
Equinor hired a Hercules drill rig owned by SFL Corporation. The drilling program, which will focus on the Sitka well, also has an option for a second well.
The Hercules hull design is robust and has been designed and constructed for operations in a harsh environment such as Eastern Canada.
The Norwegian company expects to be drilling by the second quarter of next year.
