The Mayor of Marystown says frustration over the closure of the Canning Bridge continues to grow.
The bridge, which is the only connection between the north and south sides of town, was abruptly closed to traffic last winter due to safety concerns.
That’s cut some residents off from essential services, forcing them to travel a considerable distance to get to where they need to go.
Brian Keating says council has been doing what it can to make sure replacement of the bridge is a priority.
He says it’s not only an inconvenience, but it’s become a financial burden for those trying to get back and forth. He says council has met with the premier, government ministers and the area MHA. He says a concerned citizens group has been formed and they want action.
Another winter is on its way, and they’re hoping that engineering and design work will be done by the spring so construction can begin.
He says the 311 foot span is not an overly complex structure, so he’s hopeful that bridge designers “can pull this together fairly fast.”
