An Ukrainian Independence Day celebration is set for the George Street stage area of downtown St. John’s this evening.
Ukrainian Independence Day has been marked in Ukraine since the dissolution of the Soviet Union back in 1991, but has taken on particular poignance since the Russian invasion.
Maria Cherwick of Ukrainian NL says despite the ongoing war, they wanted to put a positive spin on Independence Day with a celebration of Ukrainian culture.
Among the highlights of this evening’s events are musical and dance performances. Ukrainian dance is well known for its vibrancy and athleticism. Cherwick they’re also doing a Ukrainian dance workshop.
Cherwick jokes they won’t be expecting people to perform the high jumps, spins and kicks for which Ukrainian dance is famous.
She says while it’s important to spread awareness and talk about what’s happening in Ukraine, but it’s also important to share the positives.
The event is free this evening from 7:00 to 9:30 p.m. in the area of the stage on George Street. Everyone is welcome.
