A committee has been struck and officials are looking at ways to recognize the profound impact of Hurricane Fiona, which slammed into the province’s southwest coast in the early morning hours of September 24, 2022.
Unlike many hurricanes and post-tropical storms that have hit the province in the past, Fiona’s destructive power was in its storm surge that literally pulled homes into the ocean and scoured the coastline in Port aux Basques, Burnt Islands and other surrounding communities.
Port aux Basques Mayor Brian Button says the rebuilding continues.
He says they’re looking at ways to mark the anniversary and acknowledge the pain and suffering the storm caused.
“It’s been a tough year” says Button, who says it was the toughest year he’s had on both a personal and professional level.
