Participants turned out on a beautiful Sunday afternoon to take part in the first Walk of Hope in support of Ovarian Cancer Canada in a number of years.
Co-chair of the local Walk of Hope, Virginia Middleton, says the mood was upbeat with a number of scheduled events in the family-friendly event at the Manuels River Interpretation Centre in CBS.
Middleton says it’s been a “weird few years” and they were pleased to participate in person this year.
Patty McCarthy, whose sister Delores was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2003, participated in the event. She broke down when she described what her sister was going through when she founded the Walk for Hope in 2004.
“Part of her therapy was looking into ways that she could educate herself and help others,” says McCarthy. Her voice caught when describing how “she had that type of strength within her to help other people.” McCarthy describes Newfoundland’s first Walk for Hope nearly 20 years ago as a huge undertaking.
Plans are already in the works for next year’s event on Sunday, September 8.
