The English School District confirms that Markus Hicks—the 32-year-old teacher and volleyball coach now facing 50 charges in connection with an ongoing police investigation into alleged sexual assaults—was a substitute and replacement teacher. As a result, Hicks would have taught at various schools in the Avalon region, including Waterford Valley.
It’s alleged that fictitious identities, social media apps and concealment were used to arrange sexual activity.
The school district issued another release to parents following the latest charges sworn-to in court yesterday. In it, the board says additional supports have been provided to schools, where necessary, including educational psychologists and student services staff. They are once again asking parents to have in-depth conversations with students about safe social media use.
The Newfoundland and Labrador English School district says help is available for students as more charges come to light against a teacher and coach.
The school district says they remain limited in the information that can be shared as the investigation continues. However, they acknowledge that the information is concerning for many in the school system, and note that guidance supports are available in all schools. Additional supports such as educational psychologists and student services staff can be made available.
The district is encouraging all parents and guardians to speak with their kids about safe social media use.
Meanwhile, the NL Volleyball Association has acknowledged the arrest of Hicks, who was a coach. They are in close contact with Volleyball Canada and anyone with information to come forward.
